During the Spanish domination, for three centuries Lima was the most important city in South America, rivalled only by Mexico City. Its great past history has left the capital of Peru with some important colonial buildings that still reflect the splendour of a bygone era. In the last decades the city has seen a rapid growth and the investment in the tourist industry has been important.
