TOUR CH-05 Atacama & Uyuni Salt Flat

Located in the Bolivian Andean Plateau at an altitude of 3,665 metres, the Salar de Uyuni represents the world’s greatest salt resource and is the earth’s largest salt flat.  Its surreal appearance is best appreciated in the dry season when a horizon of whiteness stretches as far as the eye can see, but in the wet season, too, it takes on otherworldly proportions.

This splendid natural phenomenon is easily accessed from Calama or San Pedro de Atacama and a visit can be made as a circular trip or as part of a trip continuing on to the attractive Bolivian cities of Potosi then Sucre and La Paz.

The best time to visit the salt flat is from April to November, the dry season.  Although night temperatures can be very cold, during the day there is intense sunshine and blue skies.

Our 3-day programme includes overnight accommodation in San Pedro de Quemez at the traditionally-built Tayka de Piedra Hotel.  In the midst of the salt flat we visit Incahuasi (Pescado or Fish Island), famous for its giant cacti, up to 6 metres in height with some over 1,000 years old.  Another great attraction on the itinerary is the Eduardo Avaroa National Park where there is stunning scenery in the shape of the Red and Green Lagoons, as well as other lakes of great beauty like Edionda and Chiarkota.  Hardy animals have adapted to this dramatic natural wonderland - there are some 80 species of birds in the area, with the park’s three species of flamingo standing out as the most flamboyant - Chilean, Andean and James Flamingo.
